Translating Military Training Transcript to College Credits

Hey! So, I've served in the military and I have a transcript of my training. I was wondering if anyone knows how this could be translated to college credits? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Hello! That's a great question. Many institutions will grant academic credits for military training. The first step is usually to submit your Joint Services Transcript (JST) to the college or university. The JST provides a description of your military schooling and work history in civilian language.

The process of translating your training into academic credit will depend on the school’s policy, but it usually involves evaluating your JST and aligning your military education and job experiences with similar college courses. Institutions will typically follow the credit recommendations established by the American Council on Education (ACE).

Keep in mind, colleges and universities have discretion over how much, if any, credit they grant for military training and experience. A best practice would be to contact the admissions office or registrar at the schools you're interested in, and ask about their specific policy towards military training credits.

Also note, in addition to your JST, some schools may also award credit for passing scores on exams such as the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) Subject Standardized Tests (DSST Exam) or the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP).

Talking to a college advisor or a veterans’ services representative at your intended school will be a good starting point. They'll be able to guide you through the process.

Lastly, be aware that even if you receive a lot of credit for your military training, those credits may not necessarily help you meet all the requirements for your chosen degree program. Still, it can definitely help you complete your degree faster. Good luck!
