Issue of Debate: Is College a Waste for Most People?

I happened across an interesting argument that states 'college is a waste for most people.' What are your thoughts on this? I'm genuinely curious to hear different perspectives on whether or not the cost and time invested into attending college is truly worth it for the majority of individuals.

As a college admissions counselor, I'd say that it's a nuanced issue. Fundamentally, whether college is 'worth it' hugely depends on an individual's goals, skills, and planned career path.

For some people, college is unarguably crucial. Industries like healthcare, engineering, law, or education typically require a college degree. Higher levels of education often lead to higher salaries in these fields.

Additionally, college provides various forms of personal growth beyond academic learning. Students often mention the opportunity to explore different fields, gain independence, make lifelong friends, join organizations, and participate in internships or study abroad programs as essential parts of their college experience.

However, for others, pursuing an alternative path like vocational training, entrepreneurship, or going straight into the workforce can indeed be a lucrative and fulfilling option. Some industries, like tech or art, may value skills more than formal education. Consequently, learning on the job or through other less conventional means could be more beneficial.

Plus, the cost of college can be a significant burden. Student debt is a serious problem, and not all graduates find jobs that enable them to handle this debt comfortably. Even with financial aid, the cost can be prohibitive for some families.

In terms of pure earnings, a well-cited Georgetown University study found that, on average, college graduates earn $1 million more in earnings over their lifetime than high school graduates—though again, this will vary by field.

So, is college a waste for most people? It really depends on the person. I wouldn't say it's a waste for most, but I would say it's not for everyone—and that's OK. It's important to weigh the costs and benefits, consider one's long-term goals, and explore all viable learning and career pathways.
