Pursuing Military Education in NJ

I'm a junior in high school living in New Jersey and I'm considering a path into the military via education. What are considered the best military colleges in NJ? Are there benefits to attending a college in my home state?

In New Jersey, there are a few notable options if you're considering a military education route.

First, the United States Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck operates a Naval ROTC program in partnership with Rutgers University. Participating in the Navy ROTC program allows you to attend college like any other student, while also receiving training to become a Navy officer upon graduation.

Second, The College of New Jersey, located in Ewing, offers a well-regarded Army ROTC program. This combines the regular college experience with additional classes and training targeted towards commissioning as a U.S. Army officer.

Another option, specifically for those interested in an engineering career in the military, is the United States Coast Guard's Marine Inspection and Investigation school in Jamesburg.

As for benefits of attending a college in your home state, yes, there are several. For starters, in-state tuition tends to be lower than out-of-state tuition, which could result in substantial financial savings. Additionally, being closer to home can provide a useful support system as you navigate the dual demands of military training and college courses. Lastly, if you have a particular interest in serving within your local community post-graduation, building connections and networking through a local program can be quite beneficial.

Keep in mind that a military education isn't limited to colleges with special military programs. Many New Jersey colleges and universities have Veterans Affairs offices that can help navigate benefits, and service member-friendly policies. Many students have found great value in combining military service with education in a broader range of studies, so it may be worth exploring these options too.
