Connection of University of Maryland University College with Military?

So, I've noticed that a lot of military personnel around me lean towards the University of Maryland University College. Can someone fill me in on the connection between the UMUC and the military? Extra perks for military students, maybe?

Yes, you're correct in noting the connection between the University of Maryland Global Campus, formerly known as the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), and the military. Since its inception in 1947, it has had a strong commitment to providing educational opportunities for military-affiliated students and veterans.

One defining attribute of the university is it has extended campuses on military bases, both domestically and internationally. This enables military personnel to continue their education while on active duty, without being constrained by their location.

UMGC offers reduced tuition rates for military personnel, veterans, and their family members. There's also an Office of Veteran Student Services along with several scholarships specifically aimed at military-affiliated students.

Aside from this, they have a department called Veteran Initiatives and Outreach, which focuses on assisting veterans and their families in their transition from military to civilian life. They provide various services such as academic and career advising, visa and immigration advisement, and even help in getting military experience assessed for academic credit.

UMGC also participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which can help cover out-of-state or private school tuition that goes beyond the maximums of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill.

Given these elements, it's no surprise many military personnel find UMGC an attractive choice for pursuing higher education.
