Experiences with attending college after military service?

I’ve often thought about joining the military after high school, and then possibly attending college later. But I’m curious about how that transition might work. Does anyone have experiences or know someone who has gone to college after serving in the military? What might be the challenges and opportunities to look out for?

As someone who frequently assists students in transitioning from various life paths to college, I've seen several veterans make this transition successfully. Attending college after military service can be a rewarding and enriching experience. Here are some things to consider:

1. Financial Benefits: One significant benefit is the financial support available for veterans. The GI Bill can cover a significant portion, if not all, of your tuition expenses and some cost of living expenses. The Yellow Ribbon Program may also offer additional financial benefits.

2. College Credit: In some cases, your military training and experience can be converted into college credits, saving you time on certain courses or requirements.

3. Leadership and Life Experience: Your military service can provide you with leadership and life experiences that can benefit you in your studies, and might make you stand out in the college application process.

4. Veteran Services: Many colleges have veteran services offices that exist to help ease the transition from the military to college life. These offices can often provide guidance on matters such as course selection, study strategies, and connecting with other veterans on campus.

Despite these benefits, the experience can also present unique challenges including:

1. Adjusting to Campus Culture: The transition from a structured military environment to a more laid-back college atmosphere can be a significant change.

2. Age Gap: As a veteran, you might find that you are older than many of your classmates.

3. Accessibility of Benefits: Navigating the benefits system for veterans can be complex. It's crucial to educate yourself on this process and ask for help from the appropriate resources when necessary.

Remember, everyone's experience will be unique based on their individual circumstances. It's important to seek advice from others, but also to trust your own instincts and make the decision that's best for you.
