Education Levels of Enlisted Personnel?

The image of grizzled veterans returning to education post-service is persistent. So, here's the question: what percentage of those who enlist already have a degree? Does this influence their roles or positions in the military? Does a degree affect their experience as an enlisted member?

According to the Defense Department, as of 2020, 6.7% of active-duty enlisted personnel in the U.S. military have a bachelor's degree or higher. This percentage is even higher among officers, with over 83% holding at least a bachelor’s degree.

As you might expect, having any degree or higher education credentials generally plays a significant role in the military paths of those who enlist. Service members with degrees have the potential for faster progression through the ranks and a greater chance of securing leadership roles. For example, in some branches of the military such as the U.S. Navy, enlisted sailors with college credits can be eligible for accelerated advancement.

It's also noteworthy that those with a degree are likely to have an enhanced experience in the military. The knowledge, critical thinking skills, and self-discipline gained from pursuing higher education can enable service members to better understand and adapt to various challenges and tasks they might encounter during their service. This can bring personal satisfaction and recognition of their abilities, enhancing their overall military experience.

Even members who join without a degree can take advantage of numerous programs offered by the military to pursue further education while serving. The Tuition Assistance Program, for example, provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty education programs.

So, while possessing a degree is not essential for enlisting, it certainly can affect one's roles, career advancement, and overall experience in the military.
