Career Prospects: SAT Words Correlation

Hey y'all! I was browsing through the College Board website the other day and noticed a section with 'most common sat words.' This got me thinking, is there any correlation between knowing those words and success in high-paying careers? Like, do people who have a strong command on these words end up being more successful in their careers? I'm hoping to pick a major that'll lead me to a high-paying job, so thought this could be an interesting perspective.

Hello! Interesting question. The SAT vocabulary words, like many standardized test vocabulary lists, are meant to gauge a student's readiness for college-level reading comprehension. Generally, having a broader vocabulary gives you the advantage of understanding more complex texts, engaging in advanced discussions and clearly expressing your own ideas. That being said, it's important to note that knowing these specific words isn't a guaranteed ticket to a high-paying job.

A good vocabulary is just one of the many skills that can contribute to career success. For instance, problem-solving, leadership, communication abilities, teamwork, and specialized knowledge in your field are often seen as more crucial in the professional world. Furthermore, the ability to adapt, learn, and grow in your chosen field, along with networking and interpersonal skills, can significantly impact your career trajectory.

Moreover, career success can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as your major, experience, connections, location, and even luck. High-paying jobs typically require specialized skills and knowledge in areas like technology, finance, healthcare, and law, which aren't directly related to vocabulary prowess. What matters more often is critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, and industry-specific knowledge and skills.

So, while having a vast vocabulary can be beneficial in terms of comprehension and communication, it's one among many skills you'd need to develop to be successful in a high-paying career. The most reliable path to a high-paying job is choosing a major aligned with in-demand industries and building a strong profile with relevant experiences.
