Information about King's Point?

I've heard conflicting info about King's Point. I'm curious; is it most worth your money among colleges? Any perspectives would be incredibly helpful.

King's Point, formally known as the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), is a federal service academy that prepares students for a career in the maritime or transportation industry. It's located in Kings Point, New York, and offers a Bachelor of Science degree in areas such as marine engineering and shipyard management.

One unique aspect of attending USMMA (or any federal service academy) is that you receive a full tuition and boarding scholarship, meaning you do not pay for your education out of pocket. You do, however, commit to a service obligation upon graduation.

The service obligation is typically a "5-year sail" commitment. Here, you agree to serve five years in the U.S. maritime industry with eight years of service as an officer in any branch of the U.S. military reserve unit. This obligation can take many forms, from sailing on U.S. flag vessels, commissioning into any branch of the armed forces, or working in a certain marine-related industry.

In answer to your question about worth, the value of attending a college like the USMMA is often more about the unique experiences and the future career paths it potentially opens up, such as serving in the maritime industry or military service, rather than purely about financial worth.

However, if you're focused solely on financial worth, given the relatively high starting salaries for mariners and the zero tuition cost, it could be seen as offering a very high return on investment. As always, it's important to consider your personal career aspirations, interests, and commitment to service when evaluating the worth of any college.
