Should I consider taking a ceramics class as a high school student interested in Engineering?

What’s up guys! I’m really into engineering and plan to major in it, but I’ve always liked art too. Our high school offers a ceramics class and I’m tempted. Will colleges like that I have a diverse set of interests or will it seem like I’m not focused enough on STEM?

Hey there! It's awesome that you have a passion for both engineering and art. As an aspiring engineer, it's definitely important to show colleges your strength in math and science.

However, a ceramics class can add a unique dimension to your application, illustrating your diverse interests and creative thinking skills. Engineering is, in many ways, a creative discipline itself, where design and aesthetics can play a part in building solutions. This ceramics class could actually show your ability to think outside the box, a trait that is highly valued in the engineering field. Plus, it can offer you a refreshing break from the more technical subjects, which helps in maintaining a balanced and enjoyable high school experience.

Just make sure you're also taking challenging courses in math and science to demonstrate your readiness for an engineering program. Incorporating your interest in art into your application could make for a compelling narrative about how you view the world and solve problems. So go ahead and explore ceramics without worry!
