Colleges that have produced the most members of Congress?

I've got political aspirations and I'm wondering which colleges have produced the most graduates who ended up in Congress? Is there a particular major that these grads tend to have?

While I couldn't find an exhaustive list of schools that have produced the most members of Congress, there are some names that come up frequently. Harvard University, Yale University, and Stanford University are the three U.S. universities that have produced large numbers of Congressional members, with Harvard leading the pack by a substantial margin.

As for majors, the last I looked at the Congressional Research Service's profile of Congress, a majority of sitting Congresspeople had undergraduate degrees in Political Science, Economics, or other fields in the social sciences. However, a well-rounded education is key for a career in public service. Critical thinking, writing and communication skills, and a working understanding of history, economics, international relations, and the like are all assets. That said, there isn't a 'pre-Congress' major in the same vein as pre-med. In fact, Congress comprises individuals with all kinds of academic backgrounds, from the natural sciences to law and everything in between.

Remember, though, that getting into Congress involves more than just choosing the right school or major. Volunteering or interning in political campaigns, joining student government, seeking out leadership positions, and networking are all crucial steps to take. Also, a strong understanding of your constituency and the ability to communicate and listen empathically to different viewpoints is at the core of being an effective legislator.

You might also consider grad school: most congressional representatives have law degrees, so that's something to consider (again, with Harvard Law School being a top feeder). But above all, find what genuinely excites and engages you and use that to guide your decisions. We need politicians who are both passionate about and informed on their areas of focus.
