Colleges Emphasizing Community Service

Community service has always been a huge part of my life and it's something I want to continue in college. Which colleges are known for having a great emphasis on community service?

There are several colleges that are known for placing a strong emphasis on community service. Tufts University in Massachusetts consistently ranks high due to its commitment to service on a local, national, and global level. Their Tisch College of Civic Life is one of the premier institutions for the study and practice of civic engagement.

Georgetown University, with its strong Jesuit traditions, places a heavy emphasis on service and social justice. They have a Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service, that fosters around 40 volunteer programs for students to get involved.

Historically, the College of William & Mary in Virginia tops the list of service-orientated schools. It has a strong Office of Community Engagement and a well-regarded service component to its first-year orientation program.

Tulane University in New Orleans is another school that stands out. After Hurricane Katrina, Tulane incorporated a public service graduation requirement that links academic coursework to community needs.

Lastly, Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles has a Service Organization Community which houses several small service-focused organizations people can participate in. LMU also has a Center for Service and Action that helps to coordinate further service opportunities.

These colleges are nationally recognized and known for fostering a strong tradition of service among their student bodies.
