Applying as a Band Geek

So, I've been in band all throughout high school. Was curious if most colleges require band as an entrance requirement, or if it's just seen as an extracurricular bonus? Would love to find a school that appreciates my passion for music!

In most scenarios, participation in a high school band is considered an extracurricular activity and is treated as a bonus when applying to colleges, especially if you've shown a significant level of commitment and contribution to it. It's not typically a requirement for admission unless you're applying to a specific music program or school.

If you're planning to major in music or a related field, some colleges, particularly music conservatories and some university music programs, may require an audition as part of the admissions process. This will include showcasing your skills with your instrument. In these cases, your experience in a high school band can provide a substantial foundation for your applications process.

If you're not applying to a music-specific program but still desire to continue your music involvement in college, many schools have marching bands, concert bands, jazz bands, and other ensembles you could join. Some even offer scholarships for participating in their bands, whether or not you're a music major. For example, the University of Texas has the Longhorn Band, which all students can audition for and participate in, regardless of their major.

Remember, colleges appreciate students with a passion and who can demonstrate notable involvement and achievement in their extracurricular activities. Quality is more important than quantity. Your passion for music as well as your experience as a "band geek" could serve as a unique aspect of your application and could potentially be a great topic for your college essays. It could show your dedication, teamwork, and discipline, all of which are characteristics highly valued in the college environment.
