College Application Interviews

Hey there! So, I'm prepping for my applications right now and I was wondering, is it common for most colleges to do interviews with prospective students? Just want to ease my nerves so I know what to expect!

While not all colleges offer interviews, many do, particularly more selective institutions. Typically, interviews are a great opportunity to demonstrate your interest in the school and to ask any specific questions you might have. Generally, interviews are conducted by college alumni or admissions officers and they’re an opportunity for the school to learn more about you beyond your application--you can expect to answer more open-ended, personality-related questions, such as "tell me about yourself" or "why are you interested in our college?"

For many schools, though, interviews are entirely optional and not doing one will have no negative impact on your application. However, they can be a great way to stand out if you're prepared and present yourself well! So, if offered, it's usually a good idea to take the opportunity. It's also important to note that not every school weighs interviews heavily in the decision making process. Some might see it as a mere formality or an opportunity for the applicant to ask questions, rather than a vital part of the application review.

Don't worry too much. The emphasis of college interviews is more on getting to know you as a person and less on grilling you with tough questions! Another tip: doing practice interviews with friends, family, or a guidance counselor can go a long way in calming your nerves and making you more prepared. Good luck!
