Underrated Gems: Overlooked Colleges

So I've been doing my college research, and I've noticed there are so many colleges out there beyond the well-known ivies. I really want to find some underrated gems that may not get as much spotlight. What are some of the most overlooked colleges that you guys would recommend and why?

Absolutely, there are a multitude of great colleges out there that don't necessarily have the name recognition of the Ivies but that provide excellent education and opportunities. Here are a few I'd recommend you to consider:

1. St. Olaf College (Minnesota): Known for its strong programs in music and sciences, and having a unique emphasis on global engagement, St. Olaf is often overlooked due to its location in the Midwest. It offers a fantastic sense of community and high student satisfaction.

2. Bates College (Maine): Being overshadowed by Bowdoin and Colby, other NESCAC schools in Maine, Bates is sometimes forgotten. It offers rigorous academic programs with a huge emphasis on the senior thesis. Bates is particularly known for its unique commitment to social justice.

3. University of Richmond (Virginia): This school offers the resources and opportunities of larger research universities, but with the small class sizes and community feel of a liberal arts college. Plus, it's located less than ten miles from downtown Richmond, a culturally rich and historic city.

4. Whitman College (Washington): Whitman is truly one of the West Coast's hidden gems. Besides its strong academics and vibrant on-campus community, Whitman places a strong focus on experiential learning with lots of available internships and study abroad programs.

5. Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania): Although it's a part of the Tri-Co Consortium with Bryn Mawr and Haverford, and a member of the Quaker Consortium with UPenn, Swarthmore often remains underrated. Known for its Honors program which is modeled after the tutorial system at Oxford, it fosters a deep intellectual environment with an emphasis on discussion and dialogue.

Remember, it's crucial to find a college that fits you well in terms of size, location, culture, academic programs, and extracurricular opportunities. Don't just consider its ranking or prestige. Each of these colleges has its own unique benefits and could be worth exploring in depth.
