Role of teachers in college

I've been told that most students see teachers as some kind of 'bankers of knowledge' in college. They just give you the info and you gotta figure it out. Can anyone who's already in college confirm this?

That's a quite prevalent perspective, but it's not absolutely accurate for every situation. Teachers in college are certainly experts in their fields and a primary source of information; however, their role often extends beyond being "bankers of knowledge".

In many cases, professors are expected and willing to guide you in expanding and applying the knowledge they impart. They provide context, help students make connections between different ideas, and illuminate complex concepts. Many professors prioritize critical thinking and problem solving, wanting students to understand and discuss concepts rather than just memorizing them.

In addition, many professors also serve as mentors, providing guidance for career paths and even life advice. They can offer assistance on research projects, and often, they're professionals in their field who can provide you with a unique, real-world perspective.

Finally, consider that college is also about autonomous learning, so there's an expectation that students will take responsibility for their education too. It's not uncommon for there to be less handholding compared to high school. You'll be expected to independently study, complete assignments and contribute thoughtfully to class discussions.

So, while it's true that professors provide a lot of important information, they also serve as guides, mentors, and facilitators in the learning process, and they expect students to actively participate in their own education.
