Experience with HBCUs and Theatre/Acting Programs?

I'm a high school junior with a passion for theatre and acting, and I'm exploring my college options. I value the unique experience a historically black college or university can provide and I'm curious about their theatre programs. Can anyone share their stories or info on HBCUs that have great programs for aspiring actors? I'm looking for a supportive environment with opportunities to grow artistically and culturally.

Hey there! I can share a bit based on my child's experience who is majoring in performing arts at an HBCU. They were looking for a supportive and culturally enriching environment, much like what you're seeking. They landed on an HBCU with a fantastic theatre program that really nurtures their students, offering a blend of traditional and contemporary African American theatre, as well as a mix of instruction in classical texts and performance styles. The faculty support is amazing, and the sense of community is something they wouldn't trade for anything.

There are always plenty of opportunities to get involved, both on stage and behind the scenes, which has been crucial for their artistic growth. Plus, there are often guest lectures and workshops by notable artists in the industry that are immensely beneficial. I'd recommend looking into Howard University's Theatre Arts program, which has a phenomenal reputation, as well as Morehouse College and Spelman College, known for their dedication to the arts and their nurturing academic environments.

Make sure to check out their alumni networks because that's a good sign of how well connected you'll be after graduation. Visit the campuses if you can and talk to current students in the program to get that firsthand experience. This was invaluable for my child when making their decision. Best of luck on your journey to finding the right program for you!
