Is US History a Common Requirement for Colleges?

Hey! I'm planning my senior year schedule, and I'm not sure about taking US History. Is this a course that most colleges require? I could use the extra time to focus on my AP courses or extracurriculars if not. Any advice?

While many high schools may require U.S. History for graduation, the colleges you apply to won't necessarily impose specific course requirements (with some exceptions in cases like engineering or nursing programs which might have specific prerequisites). However, most colleges will expect to see a certain level of course rigor in your transcript. In that sense, it’s often advantageous to have a mix of classes covering a variety of subjects, including history, to show that you're a well-rounded student.

That being said, if there are other AP courses or extracurricular activities that align better with your intended major or your academic interests, it might be more beneficial for you to focus your time and energy on those instead. For instance, if you're aiming for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) college path, focusing on AP STEM courses might be more beneficial for your college applications. Conversely, if you’re looking at a major in the social sciences or humanities, a history class could strengthen your application.

Remember, it's more about showing admissions teams that you're capable of challenging coursework and applying yourself effectively than fulfilling a specific course set. That being said, definitely consult with your high school counselor to ensure you're meeting all necessary graduation requirements! So, while it's important to consider college requirements when planning your high school schedule, don't forget to align your courses with your interests and career goals. Keep in mind that all aspects of your application will be considered, from your academic record to your extracurricular activities, so it's worth investing time in both areas.
