Question about ACT Superscoring

Hey! I've heard that some colleges use a super scoring system where they take your best score for each section across multiple ACT tests. Do most colleges do this or is it just a few?

Not all colleges superscore the ACT, but a number of schools do. Superscoring is when a school considers the highest score you've received on each section of the ACT (or SAT), regardless of the test date. For example, if you got a higher math score on your second attempt but a higher science score on your first attempt, a school that superscores would take both of these high scores into account.

However, the policy varies between institutions. Some colleges look at your highest composite ACT score from a single test day, instead of superscoring. And other colleges might look at all of your scores and take them into consideration holistically.

When you're planning where to apply, I would recommend checking the admissions websites of the specific colleges you're interested in. There, you can usually find their policy on ACT superscoring. It's important to know this information because it can factor into your testing strategy and how many times you decide to take the ACT.

That being said, a growing number of colleges have also moved towards a test-optional policy, meaning you don't have to submit ACT or SAT scores at all. These policies have become more common in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the 2024-2025 application cycle, a number of colleges have extended their test-optional policies. But keep in mind that some schools have resumed requiring test scores. It's good to stay updated on these policies as well to ensure the best possible strategy for your situation.
