Schools that breed Olympians?

Hey peeps, I'm a junior in high school and a pretty successful swimmer. I've always dreamed of making it to the Olympics, so I'm curious to know if there are any colleges that produce a lot of Olympians. Please fill me in.

You're quite lucky as a swimmer because some colleges have indeed produced a significant number of Olympians in swimming.

The University of Southern California (USC) and Stanford University both have distinguished histories of Olympic participation. As of 2021, if USC were a nation, it would rank 12th in the world in all-time Olympic gold medal count—ahead of countries like Canada and Brazil! Moreover, the university has had at least one alumnus win a gold medal in every Summer Olympics since 1912.

Stanford University is also renowned for its Olympic pedigree, especially in aquatic sports like swimming and water polo. Stanford athletes have won medals in every Olympics for over a century, since the 1908 London Games. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, 27 Stanford-affiliated athletes from nine countries won 27 Olympic medals.

The University of California, Berkeley (Cal) has a similarly strong history of Olympic representation. From the 1920 Antwerp Games to the 2021 Tokyo Games, at least one Berkeley student has won a medal in every Summer Olympics. The university is particularly strong in swimming, with a number of current and former students and staff from the men's and women's swimming teams participating in the Olympics.

The University of Texas (UT) at Austin is also known for generating Olympic swimmers. The men's swimming and diving team, for instance, has won multiple NCAA Championships over the years and produced countless Olympians.

Keep in mind, however, that the collegiate path to the Olympics isn't the only one. Plenty of athletes make it to the Olympics by training with individual coaches or clubs. And just as important as a school's track record of producing Olympians is its ability to support you academically and personally. You should also consider factors like the overall fit of the school, the academic programs, the coaching staff, the team dynamics, and support for athlete's academic success.

Good luck with your Olympic dreams!
