Qualifications for Flight Attendants

Considering my options post-high school and I'm really intrigued by the airline industry. Do most airlines require a college degree for flight attendants, or could I possibly pursue this career straight out of high school?

While many airlines do appreciate flight attendants with a college degree, having one is not an absolute requirement for the position in most cases. In other words, it's possible to become a flight attendant right after high school. However, airlines do have some general requirements and preferences for hiring flight attendants.

It's important to note that for most airlines, the key requirements for flight attendants are:

1. A minimum age: Often, you need to be at least 18 or 21 years old (it varies by airline).

2. A high school diploma or GED: Most airlines require completion of high school or equivalent. Some may prefer candidates with a college degree, but it's usually not a requirement.

3. Physical requirements: You should be in good health and able to meet certain physical demands of the job, which may include flexibility, strength, and height/weight restrictions.

4. Good vision: While not all airlines require perfect vision, it should be correctable to 20/40.

5. Customer-service experience: Whether from a previous job, a high school part-time job, or volunteering, this is often a highly desirable skill.

Furthermore, after being hired, you must complete a rigorous training program run by the airline. The length and complexity of the training varies for each. Covered subjects often include emergency procedures, first aid, and customer service.

So while college is not necessary, it can potentially be beneficial, particularly if you study hospitality, communication, or a related field that gives you relevant skills. Additionally, the maturity and life experience you gain during college may provide you with a competitive edge. But, again, it's not a strict requirement, and there are many successful flight attendants who started their careers directly after high school.
