What's it like being a college freshman?

I'm getting a bit nervous about starting college (hopefully!) next year. Can some current students or recent grads share some common experiences or feelings of most college freshmen? Is it as overwhelming as it sounds?

Absolutely, I'm happy to share some common experiences often reported by first-year students. Keep in mind that just like any big transition, everyone's experience will vary, so what might be challenging for one person might not be the same for another.

A pretty universal feeling amongst freshmen is a blend of excitement and nervousness. You’ll be stepping into new territory with a lot of independence, opportunities to explore, and meeting a lot of new people. For some students, the increased academic rigor can be a bit challenging at first, but universities often provide many resources like tutoring, study groups, and academic advisors that can support you.

Adjusting to sharing a room, in the case of those who live on campus, can also be a new experience for many. This prompts a lesson in communication and compromise as you navigate space with a roommate.

Feeling homesick is also quite common, especially in the first few weeks. It's important to remember most people experience this to some degree, and it usually fades as you get more acclimated to your surroundings and make new connections.

Remember that while academics are important, college is also a time to grow personally and socially. Get involved in campus life through clubs, volunteer work, sports, or other extracurricular activities. This will help you establish a network and find a community, making the college feel smaller and more personal.

There can be a learning curve, but many students find their groove after the first few weeks and absolutely love their time in college. Remember, it's okay if everything isn't perfect right away. Be patient with yourself, utilize resources available, and don't hesitate to ask for help when needed. Good luck with your college journey!
