Bearded dragon pets in college dorms?

This is a little unique, but I have a pet bearded dragon and I'd like to keeping him when I head to college. Do most colleges allow pets, like bearded dragons, in their dorms? I'm hoping he can join me, he's practically family.

Many colleges have policies in place that limit the types of pets that can be kept in dorms. Traditional pets like dogs and cats are typically not allowed due to allergies and clean-up issues. Fish in a small-tank generally are allowed, but reptiles like your bearded dragon may or may not be, depending on the school's individual policy.

Some colleges allow small, non-dangerous and non-disruptive pets, under the recognition that pets can provide comfort and even potentially aid in students' mental health. This is especially important considering the new stresses and challenges college can bring.

However, other schools restrict pets to only fish or similarly contained animals. Reasons include potential damage to college property, noise, allergies to other dorm residents, and potential health issues. Furthermore, some animal and species-specific restrictions may be due to local state laws or regulations.

In your case, I would recommend reaching out directly to the residences departments of the colleges you're considering applying to and ask for their specific pet policies. If you already have a list of colleges in mind, you can also try searching online with "[College Name] pet policy" to see if there's any readily available information.

One final piece of advice: bringing a pet to college, especially one that requires as much care as a bearded dragon, is a big responsibility. College life is busy and can be unpredictable. Double check your schedule and consider if you'll truly have the time and resources necessary to continue providing the appropriate care your pet needs. It might be reassuring to know that he's nearby, but his quality of life must always be a priority.

Good luck with your upcoming college journey and your pet ownership!
