Do Colleges Have Classes on Friday?

Is it common for colleges to have classes on Fridays or is it typically a free day? I'm trying to get an idea of what my schedule might look like.

Most colleges do indeed have classes on Fridays. Course schedules can vary significantly depending on the institution and the specific program of study, but it's quite typical for undergraduate courses to be held on a Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule.

In some cases, classes on Fridays might be shorter, for example, an hour long, compared to classes on Monday and Wednesday that might be an hour and a half or two hours. This means that you could have the same class at 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but it might end at 10 a.m. on Fridays.

However, it's usually up to the individual departments and professors to set their schedules. Some professors might choose to have all their classes on Monday/Wednesday, while others might prefer a schedule spread throughout the week.

Lab sessions for science classes or practicums for performing arts classes can be longer and held once a week, which could be scheduled on a Friday. You also might find that seminar-style classes where you meet once a week for a few hours can also be held on Fridays.

In graduate programs, it's more common to see classes on a once-a-week schedule, which could fall on any day of the week, including Friday.

All this means is that as you're scheduling your classes, be sure to check the offered days and times carefully, and know that you very well could have classes on Fridays. It'll also be important to balance your weekly schedule to account for studying, extracurricular activities, and work commitments.
