How much emphasis is put on language studies?

Hey folks, I'm a current junior and I've been studying Spanish for two years now. Honestly, I'm not super passionate about it and was considering dropping it next year. But I'm worried if it would affect my college applications. Do most colleges expect applicants to have three years of language studies?

Colleges' expectations when it comes to foreign language study can vary widely. However, as a rule of thumb, for competitive or selective schools, most recommend or even require at least two years of study in the same foreign language, though three to four years is often considered more competitive. This is usually to ensure that students have a well-rounded academic background and specific preparation based on their intended major.

Admissions teams value perseverance and dedication. Having several years of study in the same language can help demonstrate those qualities. That being said, if your interests and talents lie elsewhere, it could be beneficial to pursue those areas instead, but consider this decision carefully.

It's worth noting that if you plan to study at a very selective institution or if you want to apply for a liberal arts program, having more years in a foreign language might be advantageous. But ultimately, the most important thing is to create a high school program that reflects your personal abilities and interests and demonstrates depth and commitment.

Lastly, you should check with the specific institutions you're interested in. They often have direct information about their admissions requirements available online, and viewing these expectations might help guide your decision.
