Making College Visits Count

My counsellor suggested putting together a list of colleges to visit before applications. I'm intrigued, but a bit clueless. What are some ways I can get the most out of these college visits? What should I be asking or looking for?

Visiting colleges allows you a firsthand experience of the campus culture, infrastructure, and overall atmosphere, which might not be completely captured in photos or descriptions online.

First off, try to sit in on a class of your declared or prospective major. This might require coordination with the admissions office but will give you insights on the teaching style, class structure, and student-professor dynamics. Don't forget to take notes on how engaged students appear and if it looks like an environment where you could thrive.

Next, make time to tour both on-campus and off-campus housing options. Check comfort levels, hygiene, proximity to classes, and figure out what suits your lifestyle. Also, visit the dining locations, sports facilities, libraries, etc. The quality and diversity of meals served, library resources, and exercise spaces can make for an enriched college experience.

If you get a chance, try to chat with current students. Ask about their experience with advising, workload, faculty interactions, campus life, activities, and clubs. This could give you an honest snapshot of what to expect.

Check out the Student Affairs or Student Life office. Ask about clubs and organizations, wellness resources, and support services. Student-led organizations can provide rich experiences beyond the classroom, and support services can make your college journey smoother.

Lastly, explore the local surroundings too. Is it a bustling city, a quiet suburban town, or a rural campus? Check if there are sufficient opportunities for internships/jobs in your area of interest, recreational activities, accessibility to necessities, and so on.

Remember, every visit is a chance to gather information to compare colleges on your list. It's important to figure out where you'll be both happy and successful. You want to choose a college where you can make the most of the opportunities on and off-campus. Happy visiting!
