What's the typical length of college careers?

Hey all! I'm in the starting stages of my college research and stumbled upon something I can't find consensus on. How long does it usually take most people to complete their undergrad degrees? I know traditionally it's 4 years, but I've heard about both shorter and longer timelines. What have you experienced or noticed?

While the traditional undergraduate degree is described as a "four-year degree," the reality can vary based on a number of factors.

In general, the National Center for Education Statistics reports that about 41% of undergrad students earn their bachelor's degree in four years. However, about 59% manage to do it within six years. The time it takes to complete a degree can extend due to a number of reasons like changing majors, pursuing a double major or minors, participating in co-op programs or internships that require a semester or two of work experience, or part-time enrollment.

At the same time, it is possible for students to finish earlier than four years. Some ways they do this are by bringing in college credits from high school (through programs like AP or IB), taking heavier course loads during regular semesters, or taking additional classes during summer sessions. However, this path can be intensive and demands a high level of focus and organization.

Ultimately, the timeline can be quite fluid and depends heavily on the individual student's choices and circumstances. It would be advisable for anyone planning their college career to have a thorough discussion with academic advisers to map out their individual journey.
