Methods to deal with college debt?

The idea of falling into debt because of college is really overwhelming to me. How do most people out there tackle their college debt? Looking for some helpful strategies, please.

Absolutely, managing college debt is key to your financial health now and in the future. Here are a few strategies people employ:

1. Create a Budget and Stick To It: It's recommended to have a clear understanding of your income and expenses. By creating and adhering to a budget, you can see where your money is going. This could help you find ways to save or cut back, making it easier to pay down your debt.

2. Prioritize Repayment: If it's possible, try making more than the minimum monthly payment on your debts or to pay off your loans on a shorter timeline; doing so can save you a substantial amount in interest fees over the long term.

3. Refinance or Consolidate Loans: These methods can lower the interest rate of your student loans, which can reduce your monthly payments and total repayment costs. However, once you refinance federal student loans, they become private loans and lose all the federal loan protections like income-based repayment or loan forgiveness.

4. Income-Driven Repayment Plans: For federal student loans, consider income-driven repayment plans. These plans cap your loan payments at a percentage of your discretionary income. After a certain period, typically 25 years, any remaining loan balance is forgiven.

5. Public Service Loan Forgiveness: If you work in certain fields, you might be eligible for loan forgiveness. For example, Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying payments (over 10 years, basically) while working full-time for a qualifying employer (often, a government or not-for-profit organization).

Remember, it's okay to ask for professional help such as financial advisors if you're unsure about how best to tackle your college debt.
