Will my social life change drastically if I join the military?

Hey, I'm in my junior year and considering the military as an option after high school. I'm really social and love hanging out with friends, so I'm wondering to what extent my social life would have to take a backseat if I signed up. Will I still have some time to chill out and chat with friends or is it all work and discipline? If anyone can assist with some thoughts or experiences, I'd be grateful!

Joining the military does mean recalibrating some cornerstones of your life, including your social relationships. That said, it's important to note that it doesn’t mean forfeiting a social life altogether—it'll just be a little different. The first years in the military, including basic training and advanced individual training, tend to be the most demanding and can limit your free time significantly. However, once you've moved past the initial stages, you'll typically have more freedom to socialize and enjoy downtime, especially during off-duty hours and weekends.

In fact, the military community itself can offer a unique and strong social network. Many service members form close bonds with their fellow soldiers, sailors, airmen, or marines, as they share common experiences and challenges. That said, maintaining relationships with friends and family back home will require extra attention, especially when your military obligations involve deployment or frequent movements.

Regular communication, when possible, through calls, texts, or video chats can help keep those connections strong. Also, utilizing any leave you are granted to visit home and reconnect in person can help maintain your existing friendships.

While your social life will undeniably experience a shift, the military can also offer a meaningful and close-knit community. It's all about staying open to new relationships while doing your best to maintain the old ones. Remember, every military experience is unique, so personal experiences can vary greatly.
