Hi everyone! I'm a junior in high school right now and I'm strongly considering a career in medicine. Which colleges have a larger than average pre-med student population? I want to choose a school with like-minded individuals and strong support for this track.
It's great that you're interested in a pre-med track! Selecting a college that has a strong focus in your field of interest can definitely enhance your learning experience.
Some of the colleges that traditionally have a large number of pre-med students are Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University. Johns Hopkins, in particular, is known for its prestigious medical program and attracts a large number of students interested in the field. Similarly, University of Pennsylvania has a robust pre-med curriculum, and Cornell's College of Human Ecology has a well-regarded health & human biology major which is frequented by pre-med students.
The University of California, Berkeley also has a significant number of pre-med students. It also offers an extensive array of health and medicine-related extracurricular activities and resources that can be beneficial.
Rice University also stands out due to its proximity to the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest medical complex in the world, offering plenty of opportunities for internships and research.
However, do note that having a large pre-med student population is not necessarily synonymous with having a "strong support" for the pre-med track. It's equally important to consider factors like availability of advising to pre-med students, existence of health-related student organizations, opportunities for hands-on experiences such as internships or research, and proven track record of sending students to reputable medical programs.
Also keep in mind that "fit" is very important. Make sure the culture of the school, the location, the size, the teaching style, and other underlooked factors are to your liking. An environment where you feel comfortable will highly contribute to your academic success.
