Getting the most out of my college campus tour?

So, I've got a few college tours lined up (super excited btw!) and I want to make the most of them. What should I look out for, and what questions should I ask to gain a deeper understanding of the college from these tours? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Glad to hear you're taking the opportunity to tour colleges! These tours can be incredibly insightful and give you a feel for the campus environment beyond what you can see from a pamphlet or a website. Here are a few pointers:

1. Observe the overall environment. Take note of the campus layout, the facilities, location, and even the general “vibe.” Do buildings and resources seem up-to-date and well-maintained? Do students seem happy? Is the campus bustling or quiet? These might give you an idea of what day-to-day life could be like there.

2. Ask about academic resources and advising. You could ask about the resources available to students for academic support – this may include libraries, writing centers, tutoring services, and research opportunities. It's also useful to know how academic advising works and how accessible professors are outside of class.

3. Investigate extracurricular opportunities. If you have particular hobbies or interests, ask about clubs or organizations that cater to them. Or ask about what the most popular extracurriculars are. This could give you a sense of whether you will have an outlet for your passions outside of class.

4. Understand career services. Ask about what career resources and services are available to students. Many universities have career services that help with resume building, internships, job placement, etc., and knowing what support systems are in place can guide your decision.

5. Ask your tour guide about their experiences. Your guide is likely a current student, so don't hesitate to ask them about their experiences and why they chose the school. Be sure to ask what they like least about their college too, this can give you a more balanced perspective.

6. Dine in a campus eatery. If timing allows, grab a meal or a quick snack on campus. It's a small way to engage with the student community and gives a practical sampling of what's on the menu if you were to attend.

Remember, these tours should help you gather as much information as possible to make an informed decision. Don't be afraid to ask questions, after all, you're considering investing the next several years of your life there. Happy touring!
