What Do College students Tend to Forget to Bring?

As I start to think about heading off to college in the not-so-distant future, I'm curious: What are some items that most college students forget to pack? Any college packing tips would be super helpful!

That's a great question and one that will certainly help you avoid some common pitfalls many soon-to-be college students find themselves encountering. Here's a few items that often fly under the radar during the packing process:

1. Mattress topper: Dorm beds can be uncomfortable and a mattress topper can make your sleep much more restful.

2. Medicine and first aid kit: It's always useful to have a basic first aid kit for minor injuries, along with any specific medications you might require.

3. Laundry supplies: Detergent, dryer sheets, and especially quarters if your machines aren't card-operated, are some common oversight.

4. Food and water equipment: Don't forget necessities like reusable water bottles and non-perishable snacks or a mini kettle for late nights studying.

5. Important documents: Remember to bring your government-issued ID, insurance cards, and financial aid documents. You never know when you'll need them.

6. Indoor and outdoor clothes: Pack for all seasons, even if you don't think you'll be using them right away. This includes swimsuits for surprise pool parties or trips and a jacket for colder weather.

7. Spare chargers: It does not hurt to have extra phone and laptop chargers in case something goes wrong.

8. Basic cleaning supplies: A small vacuum or a broom, some wipes and cleaner can make a big difference when you inevitably spill something in your room.

9. Seasonal items: This could include a portable fan if your hall isn't air-conditioned or a small space heater (if your school allows it) to help adjust the temperature.

10. Exercise gear: Whether it's running shoes, a yoga mat, swim goggles, or frisbees and soccer balls, staying active is an important part of staying healthy in college.

As a tip, don't pack too many clothes. Dorm closets tend to be on the small side and you probably won't need as many outfits as you think. Plus, it leaves more room for shopping.

Also, depending on the college, you may be able to rent some items like mini-fridges or microwaves, so you may want to hold off on buying and shipping bulky items until you know your college's rules and rental options.

Lastly, remember that anything you forget and can't live without can likely be purchased locally or ordered online. College is a huge transition and it's inevitable that you'll realize you forgot something. Don't worry too much about it! Be sure to create a list ahead of time and check off each item as you pack it. This should reduce the chance of missing anything major. Happy packing!
