Do uni's football teams factor into their overall value?

Hey there, I hit upon this Forbes list of most valuable college football programs and it got my gears turning. What's the connection between the value of a football program and the value/reputation of the university itself? Is there one at all? The thoughts of anyone in the know would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, there can be a relationship between the value of a university's football program and the university's overall reputation, though the correlation may not be as straightforward as one might think.

It's true that a successful and valuable football program can help increase the visibility and notoriety of the university. This visibility often leads to more merchandise sales and donations, and potentially even higher application numbers. The phenomenon known as the "Flutie Effect," named after Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie, posits that a winning sports team can lead to a surge in applications and interest in a school, based on the increased exposure. Alabama's consistent football success during the last decade, for example, coincided with a massive increase in the school's enrollment and investment in facilities.

However, the value of a football program does not necessarily reflect the academic reputation or the value of a degree from that institution. A university's academic reputation is usually assessed based on factors like faculty research output, the faculty-to-student ratio, the percentage of faculty with the highest degree in their field, student retention and graduation rates, and more.

In short, while a valuable football program can bring financial and popularity benefits to a university, it isn't a reliable indicator of the academic quality of the institution. Ultimately, it's important to research universities based on the factors that matter most to you - whether that's the strength of a specific academic program, the availability of certain extracurriculars, the location, size of the student body, or yes, the strength of their sports teams.
