How does East Tennessee State University relate to the HBCU community?

I'm researching different universities and am interested in the culture and history associated with them. I've heard a bit about East Tennessee State University but wanted to know, has it ever been considered an HBCU, or is there any significant connection to the HBCU community?

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is not historically considered an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). HBCUs in the United States are institutions that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African American community. That being said, it is worth noting that ETSU is a diverse institution that prides itself on inclusivity and is home to students from various backgrounds.

Although ETSU is not an HBCU, it still might have programs, resources, and organizations that are designed to support and celebrate diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. If you are interested in the cultural and historical aspects of the university, I recommend reaching out directly to their Office of Multicultural Affairs to learn more about their initiatives and how they foster an environment of inclusivity and support for students of color.

Additionally, the university’s archives or history department could offer a deep dive into the school’s past relations and connections to the African American community and how it has evolved over time.
