What's the most dangerous sport one can play in high school?

I'm doing a school report about sports safety and I wonder, statistically speaking, what is the most dangerous high school sport in terms of injury rates? Any real-life experiences? Fact-checking would be nice too!

Based on studies from the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance, the sport that often leads in terms of injuries is American football. It has the highest injury rate with 3.78 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures (an exposure is defined as one athlete participating in one practice, competition, or performance).

To put it into some context, injuries during a football practice or game can result from player-to-player contact, high-speed running, and falls. Most injuries are usually strains and sprains. Serious injuries such as fractures and concussions are also relatively frequent in football compared to other sports.

It's important to note as well that even though football has the highest injury rates, other sports like basketball, wrestling, and females in cheerleading also have substantial injury rates and should not be overlooked.

A takeaway from these statistics is this: while playing sports in high school brings in some risk of injury, proper training, awareness of injury prevention, and appropriate use of safety equipment can significantly reduce the risk involved. Even in "dangerous" sports, risk can be mitigated with proper precautions and protocols.
