College Band Recruitment

Alright, so wondering if anyone else has some insight on this. Do colleges usually recruit high school students to be in their band, like they do for sports teams? Asking because I play in my school's marching band and was wondering if that could be any advantage. Thanks for any feedback!

While the band recruitment process in colleges isn't as proactive as sports recruitment, your skills as a band member do make you an asset. It certainly offers you the opportunity to contribute to the college community, which can be a strong point in your favor when applying.

You should take a few proactive steps to leverage your band experience. Search for colleges with strong music or marching band programs that align with your academic interests. Reach out to the band director or admissions office at those schools. Gracefully highlight your experience and express your interest in contributing to their band.

Keep a record of your band performances, especially leadership roles. For example, if you served as Drum Major or led a percussion section, this could attest to your leadership and collaboration skills. If you've participated in regional or state wide competitions, ensure they're highlighted in your application.

Demonstrating your passion and commitment for band can definitely strengthen your profile. Remember, while it might not be a determining factor like sports can be for some athletes, it can surely add another layer of uniqueness and depth to your application. Equally important are your academic achievements and other extracurricular activities.

Also consider scholarships: some schools offer them specifically for marching band participation, regardless of your intended major. To find these, try reaching out to the school’s band director or financial aid department—they can guide you in the right direction.
