How are HBCU basketball programs different from other Division 1 schools?

Hey friends, I'm a high school junior and a basketball player considering playing for a Division 1 HBCU. Can anyone share experiences or knowledge about how these programs might differ from non-HBCU D1 schools, especially in terms of culture, support, and exposure?

Hi there! My son is currently playing ball at an HBCU, and he's had quite a positive experience. One major difference he's noticed is the community atmosphere; these colleges often have a family-like feel among students and staff, which extends to the athletic programs. Culturally, HBCUs have a rich legacy and prioritize the celebration of African American history and achievement, which can be really empowering. Support-wise, he's felt very encouraged academically and personally, with coaches and academic advisors who are genuinely invested in his success.

Now, exposure can be a bit different than Power 5 schools because HBCUs may not get the same level of national media attention. However, this is changing, especially with discussions around social justice in sports elevating the HBCU profile. Plus, scouts do know talent when they see it, and they're increasingly paying attention to HBCUs. Ultimately, it's more about your development as a player and a student, and many HBCU alumni have made it to the pros. My advice? Visit the campuses if you can, talk to coaches and current players, and see where you feel most at home. Good luck!
