Is it a misconception that HBCUs only accept black students?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to clear up some confusion I have. Someone told me that HBCUs only accept black students, but I'm not sure if that's true. I come from a diverse background, and I'm really interested in what HBCUs have to offer. Could someone explain the actual admissions policies?

It's 100% a common misconception that HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) solely admit Black students. In reality, HBCUs have a mission to primarily serve the African American community, but they are open to students of all races and ethnic backgrounds. The essence of HBCUs is to offer an environment that celebrates and promotes understanding of Black culture, history, and experiences.

As a parent with a child in college, diversity and inclusion within the campus environment played a critical role in our college selection process. If you're drawn to the rich history, smaller class sizes, and supportive environment that many HBCUs are known for, I encourage you to explore and apply to these institutions. Inclusivity is at the heart of HBCUs, and they welcome students who value the unique educational experience they provide. In fact, you'll find that the student body at many HBCUs is becoming increasingly diverse. Do not hesitate to reach out to the admissions offices of specific HBCUs you're interested in; they'll be happy to provide detailed information on their admissions policies and student demographics.
