High School to College Transition - Credit Hours

I'm kinda stressing about this college thing. How can I figure out how many credits most college classes are? I've got some AP classes under my belt, but I'm not sure how that translates.

Don't worry, it can seem overwhelming but it's not as complicated as you think. To answer your question, most standard college-level courses are 3-4 credits. Labs or classes that meet for longer periods tend to grant more credits. As far as Advanced Placement (AP) scores go, they do translate to college credits at many colleges and universities. However, credit recognition highly varies depending on the institution and the AP exam score.

Some schools give college credit for AP scores of 3 and above, some give credit only for scores of 4 and above, and some don't give credit at all, but might let you channel into advanced classes based on your AP scores. That's why it can be helpful to look at the specific policies of the schools you're interested in.

The type of credit and the actual amount of credit you can earn also vary. Some schools grant credit toward general education requirements, some grant credit toward your intended major, and some grant elective credit.

For example, a score of 4 on AP Chemistry might grant you 4 credits for a freshman-level chemistry class at University A but might grant you only 3 elective credits at University B. This translates into less "in-school" time in college as you already have earned some credits, thus potentially freeing up your schedule for other classes or activities.

Remember, it's always important to check with your counseling office and the individual college admissions offices for further information. They would be able to give you the most accurate breakdown of your school's credit policy.
