Any 'sleeping' Broadway shows for high schools?

Hey gang, our drama club is scouting for some Broadway shows that aren't overly produced at the high school level. We want something fresh and not overdone. Any recommendations for less mainstream but still impactful and relevant shows we could consider staging? Thanks!

Hey there! It’s quite an exciting time for you and your drama club, seeking out plays that are less common but still carry a powerful message. There are some Broadway plays that would fit this criteria.

1. "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" is a unique one-act musical that follows an eclectic group of kids vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. It is a hilarious yet touching show with plenty of opportunities for character development and engagement with the audience.

2. "Drowsy Chaperone" is a lesser-known but critically acclaimed musical where the characters of a fictitious 1920s musical come to life in a modern man's lonely apartment. It's a comedy and a love letter to the Jazz Age musicals.

3. "Fun Home" is a groundbreaking musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes, based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir. This might be a good choice if you’re looking for something more thought-provoking and serious. It deals with themes of identity, family and memory.

4. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" is a play adapted from a novel. It provides a unique perspective as it's written from the point of view of a teenager with an autism spectrum condition. It's really heart-wrenching and the staging presents some innovative opportunities.

Of course, it's important to choose a show that your cast will feel connected to, and which fits well with the abilities of your group. Keep that in mind as you consider these options. Best of luck with your show selection and upcoming production!
