Safety in High School

I’ve seen lists floating around about the most dangerous high schools. It got me worried. How do colleges view students who come from these potentially high-risk areas? Also, if I were to explain some of my circumstances stemming from this environment, would that be appropriate in a college essay?

I understand why you might be concerned about how colleges perceive students from high-risk areas. However, it's essential to remember that colleges are primarily looking at your personal achievements, grades, test results, essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.

Institutionally, colleges are well-aware that your conditions of upbringing and education can affect your academic performance and opportunities. As a result, a student's context, which includes their school environment, the academic rigor of their school, the socioeconomic circumstances in their community, and more, is taken into account during admissions review.

In regards to sharing your experiences rooted in your environment in your college essay, the answer is absolutely yes! Colleges want to understand you as a complete individual, including the challenges you've faced and how you've dealt with them. Exploring your environment's impact in your essay could demonstrate qualities like resilience, growth, and maturity, which colleges value. Avoid making your essay sound like a complaint, but instead, focus on your fight to overcome these difficulties and what you've learned from these experiences.

Just remember, your situation is part of your story, but it's not the whole story. Infuse aspects of your personality and ambitions into your essay, with your circumstances providing a backdrop to your achievements and goals. At the end of the day, your essay should be about you, your efforts, and your aspirations.
