Quantity vs quality: How many degrees can someone realistically pursue?

Out of pure curiosity, is it even feasible to pursue multiple degrees (like, more than two)? I know some people do double majors or follow up with a Master's, but is there like a limit to how much one person can learn? Or do the people who have numerous degrees just have superhuman brainpower? Thoughts?

It's certainly possible to pursue multiple degrees, but the feasibility really depends on the person's schedule and capacity, the overlap of the programs, time, and resources. Let's split this into undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

During the undergraduate stage, many students pursue double majors, or a major and a minor, where there's overlap in the required courses. This allows students to gain knowledge and skills in two areas without having to take a larger course load than typical, and in sometimes in the same four-year time period as a single major.

For the postgraduate scenario, most people tend to specialize, focusing in-depth on one specific area and thus, pursue a single degree. But again, dual degree programs exist at the graduate level too, like JD/MBA (Law and Business) or MD/PhD (Medical and Doctorate) programs.

Two things to keep in mind: Firstly, having multiple degrees doesn't necessarily mean "more knowledge". Being educated is different from being knowledgeable and this distinction is important. Degrees provide structured learning, but a person’s adaptability, resourcefulness, and capacity to learn are key to being knowledgeable.

Secondly, every degree you pursue will require investment of time, money and effort, so the decision to pursue multiple degrees should be well thought out, considering the potential return on these investments. For instance, pursuing a second Bachelor's Degree may not be as valuable as gaining work experience or pursuing a more advanced degree.

In short, while there is no "limit" to the number of degrees one could theoretically pursue, it's a personal decision that requires one to balance the desire to learn with the practical aspects of time, energy, and resources.
