Help! Can I Afford the Most Expensive College Dorm?

Okay, so I found out about this super expensive college dorm I'm totally in love with but concerned about the cost. Does anyone have thoughts on whether top-tier accommodation like this significantly improves the college experience or if it's mostly for posh living?

From a college counselor's perspective, it's important to remember that housing is just one part of the overall college experience. Reflect on what you hope to gain from your college years. Top-tier accommodation can be appealing, with amenities resembling a high-end hotel, but whether it significantly improves your college experience might be subjective.

Some students who have opted for these luxurious accommodations do find them comfortable and conducive to an active social life. However, others have expressed that they seem to miss a bit of the classic college experience—the impromptu hallway conversations, shared bathrooms, and group study sessions in the lounge which often foster a strong sense of community.

Also, consider your budget. If affording this dorm puts a strain on your finances, it might not be worth it. A simple but comfortable housing option can still offer a great experience without putting you or your family under financial stress. The financial implications could be even more significant if you have to take out additional loans to afford such accommodations.

Finally, many students find that what really makes the college experience memorable are the people they meet, the classes and professors they encounter, and the clubs or groups they join. So while a swanky dorm might be nice, it isn't typically the defining factor of your college experience. For example, let's say you're someone who highly values your academic journey, and later in life, you may remember the intellectual conversations and study group sessions more vividly than where you lived.

So in summary, you could have a fantastic college experience in any housing situation, posh or not. Make sure you weigh your priorities and consider all aspects of your college life before committing to such a significant expense. College isn't all about where you sleep, but more about what you wake up and do each day!
