Determining the Success Rate of High School Graduates

Hey folks, my parents and I are touring some local high schools soon, and we're curious, are there any particular schools known for producing the most successful people? Also, how should I consider this factor when it comes to deciding on a high school?

When evaluating high schools, consider a range of factors beyond just the perceived prestige or fame of the institution. While some schools may be known for producing individuals who go on to do exceptional things, this doesn't necessarily mean the school would be a good fit for every individual. The school provides the foundation, but it's you who will ultimately determine your success.

Instead, a more holistic approach could involve gauging a school on the basis of its academic options (like AP or IB classes), extracurricular offerings, the student-to-teacher ratio, post-high school matriculation rates, counseling resources, and the overall school culture and community.

Looking at a school's college matriculation rates might give you a clue about how successful its graduates are. Such rates reflect the number of students who go on to college or university within a certain time frame (often a year) after graduating high school. You might want to ask about the percentage of students who go on to four-year colleges or universities versus those who attend community colleges, or how many students go on to attend top 50 or top 100 schools.

Bear in mind, however, that college matriculation rates are not the be-all and end-all. There are many paths to success and higher education is just one of them. Some students may choose to enter trade schools, the military, or the workforce straight after high school. These can also be viable paths to success and should not be overlooked.

Also, consider the supports the school has in place to support student success. A strong support system can range from robust academic counseling to additional resources for students needing extra help, such as after-school tutoring programs.

So, while it can be beneficial to consider a school's history of successful graduates as one factor in your decision, it is best to choose the high school where you feel you will be most comfortable and most challenged academically and personally, the one where you can learn, grow and pursue your interests. Always take the time to visit and get a feel for the environment and opportunities available before you decide.
