YouTubers and Higher Education

Hey guys, I can't help but think about what my YouTube-obsessed younger brother asked me the other day. Do most successful YouTubers have a college degree? I'm kind of interested to know now.

The answer varies because success on YouTube is usually influenced by talent, individual creativity, and a knack for understanding what viewers want rather than a formal education. Many successful YouTubers indeed have a college degree, particularly in fields such as film, business, marketing, or media studies, which can provide a solid foundation of skills related to creating content and managing a channel.

For instance, Hank and John Green, known for their educational channels Crash Course and Vlogbrothers, have degrees in Environmental Studies and Biochemistry respectively. Marques Brownlee, known for his tech review channel (MKBHD), has a degree in business.

However, some successful YouTubers don't have a college degree and have been able to thrive due to their unique content, personality, and understanding of their audience. For instance, Felix Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie, dropped out of college to focus on his YouTube channel.

So, in essence, while a degree isn't necessarily required to be a successful YouTuber, the skills, knowledge, and discipline acquired during a tertiary education process could be beneficial in managing a successful channel. It's also crucial to note that many YouTubers pursue their channels alongside their studies or career, offering a fallback option should their YouTube endeavors not work out. That said, successful YouTubers are generally the exception rather than the rule, and the platform shouldn't be viewed as an easy route to fame and fortune. It demands a lot of hard work, creativity, and some luck.
