Relation between high schools and National Merit scholarship recipients

Hello, I am wondering if anyone can recommend resources or studies that show which high schools have the most National Merit finalists and semifinalists? Are there certain characteristics these schools share that aid students in achieving this? I'm exploring scholarship opportunities and any information would be super helpful.

The National Merit scholarship program doesn't publicly share comprehensive data about which schools produce the most Semifinalists or Finalists. However, some high schools, particularly competitive or large ones, voluntarily disclose how many National Merit Semifinalists they have each year. Therefore, you may need to scour individual school websites or local news stories to gather this information.

As to characteristics that help students achieve National Merit recognition, the most significant factor is a strong academic infrastructure. Schools that offer robust curriculums, have accessible and experienced teachers, and foster a culture of learning often help students excel academically, including on standardized tests like the PSAT/NMSQT, which determines National Merit Semifinalist eligibility.

Access to test preparation resources can also be a contributing factor. Schools that can afford to provide SAT and PSAT-specific prep courses or study materials can help their students perform well on these assessments.

Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that larger schools generally have a higher number of Semifinalists, simply due to the larger pool of students. However, the number of Semifinalists is not necessarily an indicator of school quality, since the PSAT/NMSQT is just one measure of student ability.

In your journey towards aiming for scholarships, remember to diversify your prospects. While the National Merit program is certainly prestigious, there are a multitude of scholarship programs available that award students for a wide variety of attributes, skills, and accomplishments. Be sure to cast a wide net and pursue those that align with your unique skills and interests. Good luck!
