The cost of attending college in the U.S. can often be eye-wateringly high. This being the case, the most expensive colleges usually have comprehensive offerings that extend beyond the classroom and can include world-class faculty, groundbreaking research opportunities, and extensive resources. Here are some of the most expensive (based on total cost of attendance, including tuition, room, board, and fees):

1. University of Chicago: Known for its intense academic rigor and focus on inquiry-driven study, University of Chicago is located in one of the largest cities in the U.S. Its position gives students access to a breadth of cultural experiences and career opportunities beyond the campus.

2. Columbia University: As an Ivy League university based in New York City, Columbia offers great networking opportunities, a curriculum that guarantees a broad base of knowledge (the Core Curriculum), and access to a bustling and vibrant city.

3. Harvey Mudd College: Harvey Mudd is one of the premier engineering, science, and mathematics colleges in the nation, known for its innovative and rigorous academic programs. Though small, it's part of the larger Claremont Colleges consortium, offering students the resources of a larger university.

4. Northwestern University: While it offers a wide range of programs, Northwestern has strong offerings in journalism, theatre, and music, unique research opportunities, and a flexible quarter system. Plus, its campus in Evanston, Illinois is right on Lake Michigan's shore, near Chicago.

5. New York University (NYU): Located in the heart of New York City, NYU has strong programs in a wide variety of fields, and offers students the chance to live and learn in one of the world's most vibrant cities.

These colleges are indeed among the most expensive in the U.S., but keep in mind that many also offer generous financial aid packages to students who qualify.
