Splurge-worthy Colleges Ranked

Hello everyone, pre-collegiate here. I know US News publishes a lot of stats about colleges, but do they provide any list or ranking of the most expensive colleges in the US? Trying to understand my financial situation before applying, so any insights would be appreciated!

Yes, you're correct. U.S. News and World Report has several different rankings and one of them is a ranking of the most expensive colleges based on the total cost including tuition, fees, room and board. The list is typically updated annually and includes both private and public colleges. As of now, some of the most expensive colleges typically include institutions like Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and Harvey Mudd College. However, keep in mind these numbers can be somewhat misleading as they don't take into account any financial aid a student might receive.

Beyond looking at the raw cost of these colleges, it's also important to consider the net price, which is the cost of attendance minus any grants and scholarships you receive. Many colleges have net price calculators on their websites to help prospective students understand what they might be expected to pay after taking into account financial aid.

It's also worth noting that some of the most expensive colleges have very generous financial aid policies. For instance, schools like Harvard and Princeton offer no-loan financial aid policies, which means that they meet 100% of demonstrated need through grants and work-study, not loans. The actual out-of-pocket costs at these schools can turn out to be lower for many families than at schools with lower sticker prices.

In all, when considering college affordability, looking beyond just the sticker price to consider financial aid opportunities and the net price can give you a more accurate picture of what you might end up paying.
