Curious about well-known college secret societies?

I recently heard about the existence of secret societies in some of the higher ed institutions. I gotta say, it sounds pretty intriguing. Do any of the well-known colleges have any famous secret societies? What's their purpose? Just curious!

Absolutely, several well-known colleges have secret societies with intriguing history and traditions.

At Yale University, perhaps the most famed of these societies is Skull and Bones. Founded in 1832, its list of members (known as "Bonesmen") includes some of the most influential figures in U.S. history, including former Presidents William Howard Taft and George W. Bush. The society is believed to be a networking group for elite students but much of what they do is shrouded in mystery.

Another prime example comes from the University of Virginia. The Seven Society, established in the early 20th century, is known for philanthropy and benevolence. The society often donates to the school anonymously and plays a behind-the-scenes role in university life.

Then we have the Quill and Dagger at Cornell University. This senior honor society, founded in 1893, is known to include student leaders on campus, from athletes to editors of the school newspaper. Like other societies, its activities are kept confidential, but the society is known to foster leadership and service.

Finally, at Harvard, there's the Porcellian Club. While not exactly secret, it's extremely exclusive, with a membership that includes several notable alumni, including President Theodore Roosevelt. It functions as a private club where members gather for meals and other events.

These societies often encourage networking among influential students and alumni. Yet, a majority of their activities remain clandestine, feeding into the aura of secrecy and exclusivity. It's important to note that while these societies exist, they're not a mainstream part of student life and aren't a necessary part of the college experience.
