Top college newspapers - recommendations?

I'm interested in majoring in journalism or communication and I think it'll be pretty swell to join the college newspaper. Can anyone tell me which colleges have the most famous newspapers or which ones are known for their journalism program?

You're thinking in the right direction by considering college newspapers along with a school's journalism program. Here are a few colleges that have well-regarded journalism programs and are also known for their student-run newspapers:

1. Columbia University: While Columbia doesn't offer an undergraduate journalism major, its commitment to journalism shines through the Columbia Daily Spectator, one of the oldest college newspapers, and the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review.

2. Northwestern University: The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern is highly-regarded and they have a notable newspaper, The Daily Northwestern, run entirely by students.

3. University of Missouri: This university's journalism program is one of the oldest and most respected in the country, and their newspaper, the Columbia Missourian, offers students professional reporting experience in a real-world setting.

4. Harvard University: The Harvard Crimson is independently run by Harvard students and has a tradition of being a precursor to professional journalism for many of its staff.

5. University of California, Berkeley: The Daily Californian, Berkeley's student newspaper, is completely independent from the university. Also, the Graduate School of Journalism is one of the top in the country.

Remember, participating in journalism extracurricular activities can be a wonderful way of getting practical experience while still in school. It not only gives you writing practice but also exposes you to reporting, editing, and in some cases, the business aspects of running a newspaper.
