GPA Calculation Method

I've been stressing over my GPA since freshman year. It seems like every school calculates it differently. How do most high schools do it? Is it usually weighted or unweighted? Do they take into account all classes, or just core ones?

Different high schools often use different methods to calculate GPA, and it can be based on various factors like the grading scale of the school, whether it's a weighted or unweighted GPA, and the types of classes taken.

Typically, GPAs are calculated on a 4.0 scale in the American schooling system. If your school provides an unweighted GPA, this is purely an average of your grades without considering the rigor of the courses. An 'A' is usually worth 4.0 points, a 'B' is 3.0, a 'C' is 2.0, and so on.

A weighted GPA, on the other hand, takes into account the difficulty of your classes (like honors, AP, IB, etc.). In a weighted GPA system, higher-level classes are often given an additional grade point. For instance, an 'A' in a regular class might be a 4.0, but an 'A' in an honors class could be a 4.5 or even a 5.0.

When it comes to which classes are factored into your GPA, that also varies by school. Some high schools include all classes in the GPA calculation, while others only include core academic classes. Generally, most high schools will take into account all of your grades in academic subjects, both required and elective ones.

Just remember, while your GPA is important for college admissions, it's not the be-all and end-all. Colleges look at your GPA in the context of your high school, meaning they consider how rigorous your courses are, how well you've taken advantage of the resources available to you, and how you've challenged yourself academically within your specific school environment. They also take into account your extracurricular involvement, leadership roles, essays, letters of recommendation, and standardized test scores if submitted. So, while it's good to aim for a high GPA, don't lose sight of these other important aspects of your application as well.
